ABOUT THE BLANKET

Blossom is a motif blanket built from one small square you will end up making a whole lot of times. Each Blossom Square starts in a magic ring, and contrast color chains arc up and over the double crochets to form the petals, so the flower sits on top of the fabric instead of disappearing into it.

Squares join as you go with a slip stitch seam worked through the back loops of both squares, which means there is no marathon sewing session waiting for you at the end. When you attach the last square, the blanket is assembled. A Clean Sc round evens out the edges, then a few rounds of half double crochet worked in the third loop give the border its soft, ridged finish. Carry the main color along the back of the work between rounds and you will cut your ends down considerably.

Nine sizes are charted, so the same little square gets you a baby gift, a stroller blanket, or a full bed cover. It is worked in worsted acrylic, so it is machine washable and built for actual use.

Construction, colors and support

Every Blossom Square is five rounds worked in the round from a magic ring. You change color each round, and the contrast chains arc up and over the double crochets from the round below, which is what lifts the flower off the fabric instead of letting it sink into it.

Squares join to each other with a slip stitch seam worked through the back loops of both squares while you finish the last round, so the blanket grows as one piece and there is nothing waiting to be sewn. Once the last square is on, one Clean Sc round evens the edges and four rounds of third loop half double crochet give the border its soft ridged finish.

Colors in the blanket shown

Herrschners Worsted 8 in Ivory, Lotus, Tea Rose, Mahogany, Chambray, Leaf and Olive. The color layout chart in the PDF shows exactly where each one goes, and the Color Plotter in the app lets you swap the whole palette around before you commit to it.

Yarn substitutions

Any worsted weight acrylic will work. The PDF includes worked out substitutions for Brava Worsted, Mary Maxim Maximum Value and Lion Brand Pound of Love.

Video tutorial

A step by step video walks through the square, the color changes and the join as you go seam, so the parts that read fiddly on paper are easy to watch instead.

Support

Questions are welcome, and the Briana K Community on Facebook is full of people working on this one right now. Support covers the pattern as written and as shown in the video. Yarn swaps and size tweaks are yours to run with.
